In the ever growing age of technology, the world is undergoing immense changes and we are becoming more connected than ever before. While this is undoubtedly good in many aspects such as exposing people to new cultures, it comes with its own set of questions and challenges. Is looking through a screen really good enough to be considered exposure? In my opinion, yes. It's better than never having looked at the screen at all. But it still is very shallow or almost superficial. The only way to really get a deep intercultural experience is, with an open mind and an open heart, to dive right in.
On June 1st, 2019, I hopped on a plane that would take me farther away from home than I've ever been. This summer, I'm studying abroad at Keio University in Tokyo, Japan, taking courses on art, buddhism and... (wait for it) culture. Who could've known I'd be offered such an exceptional opportunity to travel to the other side of the world and really learn in a way that wouldn't be possible at home.
If you know me well, you know I'm not much of a writer. I may not be a Pulitzer Prize winner and struggle to write a basic email, but if you're looking for stupid jokes, a corny blog, or just want to follow along as I embark on this journey, then I'd be happy to have you.
Never stop exploring.
Best,
~Q
